2018 Golden Globe Nominations Announced

Everyone’s favorite organization, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has announced their crop of nominees for the annual Golden Globe awards which means we are truly in the thick of awards season. And in traditional HFPA fashion, they threw us more than their fair share of curveballs.

For starters, the usual suspects were all represented. Films like DunkirkThe Shape of Water, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, The PostCall Me By Your Name and Get Out all performed well across the board. The latter two, however, blanked in categories like Best Screenplay and Best Director where they were expected to grab slots. They did, however, get recognized for the actors.

Surprises came in the form of strength from films like All the Money in the World, which managed nominations in Best Picture, Director and Best Actress and Supporting Actor. The latter nomination is pretty crazy when you consider the fact that Christopher Plummer re-shot Kevin Spacey’s entire performance weeks after the film was completed in the aftermath of Spacey’s sexual assault allegations. Denzel Washington probably benefitted from the split between Drama and Comedy in the actor category, while Helen Millen surprised in the Comedy category for a film I’m almost positive no one has seen or heard of.

On the bubble contenders like Jessica Chastain, Judi Dench, Emma Stone and Hong Chau also managed nominations, giving an extra pep to their campaigns. Holly Hunter’s supporting work in The Big Sick was snubbed, as was the film which is strange given the extra room in the Comedy categories. It will be interesting to see what the Screen Actor’s Guild does in a few days.
