Spring is an important time for the music industry because it’s when artists start dropping their most radio driven work; the search for the “Song of the Summer” begins. After (divisively) winning that title in 2014 with mega-hit “Fancy,” Iggy Azalea has thrown down the gauntlet and dropped “Team.”
Carly Rae Jepsen Drops “Fever” And “First Time”
After being unfairly disregarded by both the general public and the Grammys, Carly Rae Jepsen’s sophomore LP E•MO•TION is receiving rerelease treatment in the form of a remix album. Though an official release date has not been announced, two of the tracks have been leaked online and they are EVERYTHING.
Gwen Stefani Tells Us What The Truth Feels Like
Gwen Stefani has been away from the pop music scene for some time now. If you don’t count the No Doubt “comeback” album that never really was, 2012’s underrated Push and Shove (and I don’t), it’s been almost a decade. 2006’s The Sweet Escape was a mixed bag of a record, containing some really stellar tracks (the album’s title track, “Early Winter,” “4 in the Morning” to name a few) but was bogged down by too many filler tracks that never lived up to the level of her No Doubt efforts, or even her now iconic solo debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.
Though she can churn out a basic, infectious pop anthem (“Wind It Up,” “Rich Girl,” “Hollaback Girl”) Setfani is at her best when she’s being personal. “What You Waiting For,” “Cool,” “Early Winter” and No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” are all essential listens, and each detail a story or conflict straight from the singer/songwriter’s life.
“10 Cloverfield Lane” Review
Going into 10 Cloverfield Lane I didn’t really know anything about it. I had seen vague, quick trailers on TV but had not really paid them any attention. Within the last month or so, however, I noticed the ads picked up and soon it was harder not to pay attention. Suddenly my interest was piqued. I noticed John Goodman’s involvement, and after a quick search online I found out Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Romona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) was the lead. But I still didn’t know what it was about, and I liked that.
Please Stop Telling People To “Get Over” Their Frustrations With Hillary Clinton’s Ignorant Comments
Unless you’ve been living under a rock over the past weekend, then you heard about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s comments at the funeral of Nancy Reagan this past Friday.
“Dangerous Woman” Showcases A Whole New Side To Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande’s latest single “Dangerous Woman” is unlike anything she’s ever done before. However, that may be one of the smartest moves of her career thus far.
10 Films That Could Be Nominated At Next Year’s Oscars
Though it’s only been a week since Spotlight walked away as our Best Picture winner, several films have already been making a head start on the next Oscar race.
And what’s great about this news, is that we’re already seeing a bunch of films that could potentially leave us with a more diverse slate of nominees than the last two years have. Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, Nate Parker, Ang Lee, Amma Asante and several others all have high-profile projects coming out later this year. And while that doesn’t fix the problem of diversity within Hollywood, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
Here’s a list of films that could find themselves Oscar nominees come next year.
Lady Gaga Didn’t Win The Oscar, But She Still Won
By now a thousand think pieces and recaps have been posted online reacting to the Oscars. Some have already moved on and closed the book. By tomorrow morning, the Academy Awards news cycle will be over, and people will be finding new things to discuss.
I, however, have not stopped thinking about Lady Gaga’s performance of “Til It Happens To You” from the documentary The Hunting Ground. It’s a moment that, as a survivor of abuse, I will continue thinking about for the rest of my life.
Academy Awards Spread The Wealth With “Spotlight,” “The Revenant” And “Mad Max”
What can I say about last night’s Oscars? Well, at least The Revenant didn’t win Best Picture, right?
“Spotlight” Cleans Up At The Indie Spirits
Though it’ll face more competition tomorrow night at the Oscars, Spotlight won big at tonight’s Film Independent Spirit Awards.
The film beat out nomination count leaders Carol and Beasts of No Nation for Best Film, Screenplay and Director.
Carol, however, did pick up a Best Cinematography trophy, while newcomer Abraham Attah and Idris Elba won in their respective categories.
Tangerine actress Mya Taylor made history by being the first trans actress to win an award. After being ignored all season, it was great to see her get up on stage and accept her win. Someone cast this woman in more movies please! She has screen presence for days.
Room actress Brie Larson completed her major awards collection by winning Best Female Lead. An Oscar tomorrow night will complete her SAG-BAFTA-Globe-Indie Spirit combination.
