New “Jackie” Trailer Demands An Oscar For Natalie Portman

We still have about a month left until mainstream film audiences finally get a look at Jackie, but Fox Searchlight has just released a new trailer that demands a Best Actress Oscar for Natalie Portman.

The first trailer did an excellent job at establishing Portman’s transformation, something this trailer does as well. We get a better look at the actress’ mastery of Jackie’s breathy voice, something she changed depending on who she was talking to.

More importantly however, this new trailer establishes Jackie’s struggle and battle with legacy after her husband’s assassination, something she fought to remain in complete control of despite pushback from the men around her. The film’s haunting and alien feel is also captured well here, something that makes it stand out as more than just your typical biopic.

The movie is a total work of art; like the first trailer, this one gives a great look at some of the jaw droppingly beautiful work done by cinematographer  Stéphane Fontaine. But it’s hard to think about anything beyond Portman’s masterful and towering performance. It’s so accomplished in its technical precision, while still allowing the actress to imbue so much emotion and complexity within it. As I stated in my review, it’s easily the best performance of her very accomplished career, and is certainly the one to beat for the Oscar. I think the film is a lock in categories such as Picture, Director and Screenplay as well. It’s a masterpiece.

Jackie will is set to be released in New York and L.A. on December 2, with a larger release planned later.
